Cho, Sung Woo
Born in Seoul in 1963.
Graduated from the College of Liberal Arts, Department of Philosophy, Yonsei University, in 1986.
Completed a Master’s degree in the Department of Philosophy at Yonsei University in 1989. Master of Arts. A Study on the Existence and Logical Foundations of Leibniz's Philosophy.
Received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Yonsei University in 2001. Doctor of Philosophy. The Origin of the Principle of Sufficient Reason and Written Language.
In 1993, composed music for director Hur Jin-ho’s short film For the Sake of the Metal.
Made his commercial film music debut in 1995 with the movie Runaway.
Composed music for more than 40 films, including Christmas in August, One Fine Spring Day, The Promise, and Springtime, and produced over 150 original soundtracks.
Won the Special Jury Prize at the Buenos Aires International Festival for Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000).
Received the Best Music Award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards for Springtime (2004).
Won the Best Music Awards at the 40th Grand Bell Awards and the 31st Korean Association of Film Critics Awards for Late Autumn (2010).
His main theme Last Present from the movie The Gift (2001) was released worldwide by Universal (USA). He also worked on film music for directors such as Fruit Chan (Hong Kong, Public Toilet) and Motoki Matsuhide (Japan, 10 Promises to My Dog).
Successfully held the KBS Symphony Orchestra Film Music Concert annually from 2004 to 2007 at KBS Hall and the Seoul Arts Center.
Conducted the first Korean film music tour in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo in 2005 and 2006.
Served as an international jury member for the HARPA Film Music Composer Award in February 2023.
